Yoga has been defined in many ways, but for Fiona, the most meaningful interpretation is “the stilling of the mind”. This is achieved via the “eight limbs” of yoga, including meditation, pranayama (breathing exercises) and of course asana (the poses).
There are many styles of yoga. Fiona teaches Astanga Vinyasa yoga and Hatha yoga classes.
Astanga is a more energetic style of yoga, working through a set sequence of postures (the Primary Series), focussing on the breath and the flow of prana (energy or life force). It is intended to make you sweat, to rid the system of toxins. Astanga is suitable for people who have some yoga experience already, and for fit beginners.
The Hatha class tends to be more gentle, spending some time on pranayama (breathing exercises) and sitting in stillness, as well as asana (the postures). Hatha yoga is for anyone - if you can breathe and move your body, you can do yoga!
Fiona also teaches yoga on a one to one basis, and to groups of children or adults. |
